Transportation Methods

I've seen some of the craziest things here in Guangzhou. Roads are shared with taxis, cars, minivans, large and small trucks, but there are also many many bicycles, motorcycles, and 3-wheelers used for getting around town. I have been unable to capture some of the most bizarre pictures, such as a group of motorcycle taxis hovering at a bus stop waiting for passengers to disembark, but here are a few of the more everyday sights.

A loaded truck: A loaded 3-wheeler:
A loaded motorcycle:
A loaded bus (nice car in front of it, huh?):
Another loaded 3-wheeler:

It's not uncommon to see 3 people on a motorcycle as well. The rush hour is 7:30-9:00am and 5:00-7:00pm, but traffic is heavy all the time. I'm glad we aren't allowed to drive here. I get stomachaches every taxi ride. It's like traffic in Rome - there are no rules, lane markings and traffic lights are suggested only, and there is no right-of-way. We turn left in front of oncoming traffic and expect the oncoming traffic to slow down for us! If our taxi's nose is in front of another taxi's nose, that gives us every right to edge over into their lane and push them out or behind us. Sometimes I just have to close my eyes and hang on...

Thanks Kim for setting Grandma up. I was hoping someone would update her for me - her postcard will probably take about 4 weeks to make the trip so I'll be home before it arrives! I should have known you'd be so kind. Hope you're feeling well!!!
